The South Bay Lakers opened their NBA G League playoff run with a nail-biting 122-119 victory over the San Diego Clippers Wednesday night at UCLA Health Training Center. The first-round matchup featured 27 lead changes in a contest that wasn't decided until the final possession.
Five South Bay players scored in double figures in a balanced offensive effort. Los Angeles Lakers two-way forward Drew Timme led the way with 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while center Malik Williams matched his scoring output with 21 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bufkin, on assignment with South Bay, contributed 20 points, four rebounds and five assists. His defensive play ultimately sealed the victory in the closing seconds.
The game remained tightly contested throughout, particularly in the fourth quarter where the lead changed hands eight times. South Bay finally gained separation when Chris Mañon threw down a dunk with 48 seconds remaining to put his team ahead 121-119.
The Clippers had one final opportunity to tie or take the lead, but Mañon came up with a crucial steal, and Bufkin blocked a potential game-tying three-point attempt as time expired to preserve the victory.
San Diego received outstanding performances from several players despite the loss. LA Clippers forward Cam Christie, on assignment from the parent club, recorded a double-double with game highs of 33 points and 13 rebounds along with three steals.
Two-way guards Sean Pedulla and TyTy Washington Jr. each scored 26 points for the Clippers, while two-way center Norchad Omier added another double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The victory advances South Bay to the Western Conference Semifinals where they will host the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Friday night at UCLA Health Training Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. as the Lakers continue their pursuit of a G League championship.
