The University of North Carolina has named Michael Malone as its new head basketball coach, the school announced Tuesday, April 7. The hiring marks a significant transition for the storied program as it brings in an NBA champion coach to replace the dismissed Hubert Davis.
Malone, 54, was fired by the Denver Nuggets before the playoffs in 2025, just two years after leading the organization to an NBA Finals championship. His departure from Denver opened the door for a return to college basketball, where he hasn't coached since 2001.
The new Tar Heels coach brings extensive experience despite his lengthy absence from the collegiate game. Malone last worked in college basketball as an assistant at Manhattan in 2001, following previous assistant coaching stints at Oakland (1994-95) and Providence (1995-98).
Malone replaces Hubert Davis, who was fired after North Carolina's surprising first-round loss to No. 11 seed VCU in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. The early exit marked a disappointing end to Davis' tenure with the program.
The hiring also represents a family connection to Chapel Hill. Malone's daughter, Bridget Malone, currently plays volleyball at North Carolina, providing the coach with existing ties to the university community.
The announcement confirms reporting from USA TODAY on April 6 that first indicated Malone would be taking over the prestigious program. North Carolina moves forward with a coach who brings championship pedigree from the professional ranks as it looks to rebuild following its tournament disappointment.
