Spurs Flex Depth, Overcome Injuries to Topple Trail Blazers

Thursday 9 April 20261:30 amFrost Bank Center

Even without their twin towers of youth, the San Antonio Spurs machine kept right on rolling. With both Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle sidelined by injuries, De'Aaron Fox stepped up to pour in 25 points, leading a balanced Spurs attack to a commanding 112-101 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

This isn't just a hot streak; it's a historic run. The win pushes San Antonio's record to an astounding 61-19, their best mark since 2017. More impressively, they are now 28-3 since Feb. 1, a dominant stretch that has the rest of the league on high alert.

Portland, fighting for playoff positioning, got a strong 27-point outing from Deni Avdija and 20 points from Scoot Henderson. But the effort wasn't enough to prevent a second straight loss, halting the momentum from a recent three-game winning streak. The Blazers remain ninth in the West at 40-40, now nervously looking over their shoulder at the Golden State Warriors just 2 1/2 games behind them.

The story of the night, however, was San Antonio's remarkable depth. With the NBA's past two Rookie of the Year winners watching from the bench, the Spurs had six players score in double figures. Keldon Johnson provided a crucial 20 points, while rookie forward Carter Bryant chipped in a season-high 17, showcasing the next wave of talent ready to contribute.

San Antonio coach Mitch Johnson provided an update on his sidelined stars, stating the Spurs are hopeful both Wembanyama and Castle will play in Friday's home game against Dallas. All eyes will be on Wembanyama, who needs to play at least 20 minutes in one more game to reach the league-required minimum of 65 games for award eligibility.

After a sluggish start, it was Fox who ignited the Spurs' engine. He scored 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting in the first 4:13, staking his team to an early 12-8 lead. Fox finished 10 for 20 from the field, leading San Antonio in scoring for the first time since March 1 and setting the tone for a night defined by timely contributions.

An 8-0 run to close the first quarter gave the Spurs a double-digit lead they would never truly relinquish. Then, San Antonio delivered the knockout punch in the third, closing the period on a devastating 13-2 spurt to expand a narrow four-point lead into a comfortable margin, cruising to their second straight win.

Portland will look to get back on track when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. Meanwhile, all attention turns to a Texas-sized showdown as the Spurs host the Dallas Mavericks, potentially with their full arsenal back in the lineup.
