The Connecticut Huskies are headed back to college basketball's biggest stage after overcoming a determined Illinois squad 71-62 in Saturday's NCAA Final Four matchup. Despite controlling much of the contest, UConn needed crucial baskets down the stretch to secure their championship berth.
The game unfolded as a tense battle with both teams exchanging leads throughout the first half. UConn managed to build a 10-point advantage late in the opening period, though neither team shot particularly well heading into the break.
UConn's frontcourt proved decisive as Tarris Reed dominated inside with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The big man's physical presence set the tone for the Huskies' offensive attack throughout the contest.
Braylon Mullins provided critical scoring bursts, particularly in the first half and during the game's closing minutes, finishing with 15 points. Solomon Ball added another 13 points to round out UConn's balanced offensive effort.
The victory marks UConn's third national championship game appearance in the last four seasons under head coach Dan Hurley. The program previously captured back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, establishing itself as the modern era's preeminent college basketball power.
"Our guys showed tremendous composure when Illinois made their run," said Hurley. "This team has embraced the pressure that comes with wearing this uniform and playing for championships."
With six national championships since 1999, UConn continues to strengthen its position among college basketball's elite programs. Monday's championship game offers another opportunity to add to their storied legacy.
The 2026 Final Four field featured two No. 1 seeds alongside a No. 2 and No. 3 seed, all of which navigated challenging paths to reach Indianapolis. UConn's journey included a dramatic comeback victory over overall No. 1 seed Duke in the regional final, followed by wins against No. 3 seed Michigan State and No. 7 seed UCLA after opening tournament play against No. 15 seed Furman.
Illinois reached the national semifinals by defeating No. 9 seed Iowa in the Elite Eight, preceded by victories over No. 2 seed Houston, No. 11 seed VCU, and No. 14 seed Penn.
The championship game is scheduled for Monday at 8:50 PM ET at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, with television coverage provided by CBS. UConn will face the winner of the Arizona-Michigan semifinal matchup as they pursue their seventh national title.
