The Sacramento Kings have bolstered Doug Christie's coaching staff with the addition of veteran NBA coach Mike Woodson as associate head coach.
Christie announced the hiring on Monday, bringing Woodson back to the NBA after his four-season tenure as head coach at Indiana University, his alma mater. The appointment marks Woodson's return to the professional ranks where he has built an extensive resume.
Woodson brings a wealth of basketball experience to Sacramento, having played 11 seasons in the NBA including five with the Kings franchise during their earlier incarnation. His coaching career spans from 1996 through 2021, serving in both assistant and head coaching roles before his college stint.
The seasoned coach was part of Detroit's championship staff in 2004 and has served as a head coach for parts of nine NBA seasons. His head coaching record includes three playoff appearances in six seasons with Atlanta and two postseason berths in three seasons with the New York Knicks. Woodson holds a 315-365 career record as an NBA head coach.
Christie compiled a 27-25 record as interim coach last season after replacing the fired Mike Brown in December. His tenure concluded with a loss in the Play-In Tournament, but new general manager Scott Perry decided to retain Christie as the full-time head coach two weeks ago.
The addition of Woodson provides Christie with an experienced former head coach on his staff as the Kings look to build on last season's performance and make a stronger push toward playoff contention.
