Just three days after capturing its first national championship since 1989, the Michigan Wolverines have begun reshaping their roster for the upcoming season. The program has landed a significant transfer addition in former Tennessee forward J.P. Estrella.
Estrella confirmed his decision through an Instagram post on Thursday, announcing his move to join the reigning national champions. ESPN was first to report the transfer.
The 6-foot-11 forward brings size and experience to Michigan's frontcourt. During his time with the Volunteers, Estrella averaged 10 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season. He appeared in 33 games while making 13 starts.
Estrella faced his future team directly in this year's Elite Eight, where Michigan defeated Tennessee 95-62. In that matchup, he recorded seven points and seven rebounds against the eventual national champions.
The forward will graduate from Tennessee this spring and maintains two years of remaining eligibility. He redshirted during the 2024-25 season due to a foot injury.
Michigan coach Dusty May has demonstrated consistent success in acquiring frontcourt talent through the transfer portal during his tenure with the Wolverines. This addition comes at a crucial time as the program faces potential roster changes.
Current frontcourt player Yaxel Lendeborg has exhausted his collegiate eligibility, while Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara could potentially enter the NBA draft. Estrella's arrival provides important depth and experience as Michigan prepares to defend its national title.
