**BOSTON –** For the first 24 minutes, it looked like the Charlotte Hornets might spring a major upset on the road. For the final 24, the Boston Celtics looked every bit like the championship contenders they are, flipping the script with a commanding second-half performance to secure a 113-102 victory on Wednesday night at TD Garden.
The game followed a tale of two distinctly different halves. The Hornets, led by an electric LaMelo Ball, came out firing and seemed to catch the Celtics flat-footed. Ball sliced through the defense with ease, pouring in points from all three levels as Charlotte built a surprising 31-20 lead after the first quarter and took a 61-55 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The narrative shifted completely in the third quarter. The Celtics emerged with renewed defensive intensity, clamping down on Ball and disrupting Charlotte’s offensive flow. What was a free-flowing Hornets attack ground to a halt against a swarming Boston defense.
“We just came out with a different mindset in the second half,” said Celtics guard Payton Pritchard. “We knew we weren’t playing to our standard. It was all about energy and effort, and we brought it.”
That effort was spearheaded by All-Star forward Jaylen Brown, who delivered a monster performance to lead the Celtics’ charge. Brown was relentless, scoring 35 points and grabbing nine rebounds. His aggressive drives to the basket and timely shooting provided the consistent offensive punch Boston desperately needed, especially as his co-star, Jayson Tatum, worked to find his rhythm. Despite the loss, LaMelo Ball was brilliant for Charlotte, finishing with a game-high 36 points, along with six assists and five rebounds. Brandon Miller added 20 points, but the Hornets' supporting cast couldn't sustain their first-half production against Boston's tightened defense. Rookie Kon Knueppel showed flashes with 13 points, and Miles Bridges recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The victory, while not always pretty, underscores the Celtics' ability to win even when not at their best for a full 48 minutes. Their capacity to flip a switch and dominate a half of basketball remains a hallmark of a elite team. For the Hornets, it was another lesson in closing out games against the league’s top tier, despite another spectacular showing from their franchise point guard.
