The WNBA's free agency period opened with a seismic shift as the Chicago Sky traded All-Star forward Angel Reese to the Atlanta Dream on April 6, 2026. The deal, confirmed by ESPN, sends the reigning rebounding champion to Atlanta in exchange for two first-round draft picks.
Reese concluded her sophomore season leading the league in rebounds (12.6 per game) and double-doubles (23), establishing herself as one of the WNBA's most dominant interior forces. Despite her production, the trade had been anticipated since Reese's public comments about Chicago's direction last summer.
"I'm not settling for the same s— we did this year," Reese told media outlets according to The Blast. "We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That's a nonnegotiable for me. I'm willing and wanting to play with the best."
The Sky organization responded by punishing Reese for comments they deemed "detrimental," a move that drew criticism from around the league. "She needs to get the h-ll out of there," a league executive said. "Chicago is probably the worst-run organization in the league. You're gonna suspend your best player just because she's putting pressure on you to get better? That was embarrassing to see."
Chicago GM Jeff Pagliocca framed the trade as mutually beneficial in his official statement. "This trade is designed to achieve roster balance and represents a great opportunity for all parties," Pagliocca said. "Angel has achieved many record-breaking milestones in her first two years in the WNBA and has been a competitive force for the Sky. The move positions Reese alongside established stars in Atlanta, including WNBA champion Allisha Gray and Rookie of the Year Rhyne Howard. The Dream finished the 2025 season with the league's third-best record at 30-14.
Dream general manager Dan Padover expressed enthusiasm about acquiring Reese. "She has already proven herself as one of the most impactful players in the league, and her competitiveness, production and drive to win align seamlessly with our vision," Padover said. "This is an exciting moment for our organization and our fans."
Despite the acrimonious ending, Reese shared an emotional farewell to Chicago fans through social media. "To the city of Chicago: You showed me real love from day one," she said. "Thank you, Chicago. [I'm] always Chi-Town Barbie."
The trade comes weeks after Reese made her Team USA debut alongside fellow WNBA stars Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers. She participated in the FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament as preparation for the 2026 Women's World Cup in Berlin.
"... being able to know this is a lifelong dream for me," Reese said about her national team experience according to The Blast. "Just steps to 2028. I mean, that's a big goal for me. So just continuing to take these small steps and continue to learn and grow."
