In September, the forward received a half-game suspension after making critical comments to the Chicago Tribune about the team's direction. "I will not be settling for the same shit we did this year," Reese told the newspaper at the time.
She had been vocal about the need for roster improvements, stating: "We need to get great players. I want to be in Chicago, but if things don't pan out, obviously I might have to move in a different direction and do what's best for me." Following her suspension, Reese missed the remainder of the season with a back injury.
Chicago's management framed the trade as a strategic decision for the franchise's future. Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca characterized the move as beneficial for all involved parties in an official statement.
