A game that began as a deadlocked shootout turned into a defensive clinic, as the Houston Rockets exploded in the second quarter to take a commanding 56-36 halftime lead over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday night.
The first quarter was a high-octane, back-and-forth affair, ending in a 29-29 tie. Both offenses found early rhythm, but the second frame told a completely different story. Houston’s defense locked in, holding the Pelicans to a staggering seven points in the quarter. New Orleans went ice-cold, missing 16 of their 19 shot attempts as the Rockets embarked on a decisive 20-0 run to seize total control.
Alperen Sengun dominated the interior for Houston, leading all scorers with 16 first-half points while adding eight rebounds and three assists. He was complemented perfectly by Jabari Smith Jr., who knocked down three three-pointers for 13 points. Veteran Kevin Durant chipped in an efficient 10 points, as the Rockets’ balanced attack overwhelmed the Pelicans.
For New Orleans, the offensive struggles were team-wide. Saddiq Bey’s eight points led the team, while stars Zion Williamson and Dejounte Murray combined for just 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting. The Pelicans must find answers quickly to mount a second-half comeback against a Houston team riding a massive wave of momentum.
