The Toronto Raptors are considering a major offseason move that would see Canadian forward RJ Barrett traded to the Sacramento Kings for All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, according to a recent trade proposal.
Bleacher Report contributor Andy Bailey proposed the blockbuster swap, noting that while Barrett holds sentimental value as a Canadian playing for Canada's only NBA team, his skillset overlaps significantly with Toronto's core players. "While there's some sentimental value in Canadian RJ Barrett playing for the league's lone team in Canada, his game brings an awful lot of overlap with Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram," Bailey wrote in his trade analysis.
Sabonis would immediately address Toronto's longstanding need for a dominant interior presence. The three-time All-Star has averaged a double-double every season since 2019-20 and ranks among the league's best passing big men. "But he's also a dominant rebounder and one of the best passing bigs in the league," Bailey added. "Darko Rajaković has the offensive creativity to take advantage of that wealth of playmaking."
The financial aspects make strategic sense for both teams. Barrett's contract expires after the 2026-27 season, potentially making him a flight risk in free agency. Sabonis carries a larger cap hit at $45 million in 2026-27 and $48 million in 2027-28, but his contract structure would give Toronto a clear two-year championship window alongside Barnes and Ingram.
However, the trade carries some risk for Toronto. Sabonis turns 30 next month and has shown signs of plateauing in recent seasons. The center also underwent season-ending surgery for a torn meniscus, raising questions about his long-term durability.
The proposed move represents the type of aggressive roster construction Toronto might need to compete in the Eastern Conference. With Barnes emerging as a franchise cornerstone and Ingram providing scoring punch, adding Sabonis' unique skillset could create one of the most versatile frontcourts in the NBA.
