In a surprising defensive battle, the Charlotte Hornets hold a 36-30 halftime lead over the heavily favored Boston Celtics on Wednesday night at Spectrum Center.
The Hornets seized control early, dominating the first quarter 31-20 behind a blistering start from LaMelo Ball. The star guard poured in 15 points, orchestrating an offense that found easy looks against an uncharacteristically sluggish Celtics defense. Charlotte’s energy was palpable, forcing Boston into tough shots and building a commanding early advantage.
The second quarter, however, told a different story. The Celtics’ defense awoke, clamping down to hold Charlotte to a mere five points. Boston’s own offense, led by Neemias Queta’s efficient 10 points and four rebounds, struggled to capitalize on the other end, managing only ten points themselves in a low-scoring, grinding period. This defensive stand allowed them to chip away at the lead but not overcome it.
While Ball’s scoring punch was the headline, Miles Bridges provided crucial all-around play for Charlotte with seven points, six rebounds, and three assists. For Boston, the lack of offensive rhythm outside of Queta and Jaylen Brown’s seven points is a primary concern. The Celtics will need a major offensive adjustment to overcome this deficit in the second half.
