A stifling defensive performance has the Minnesota Timberwolves in command, leading the Dallas Mavericks 44-32 at halftime on Tuesday night at Target Center.
The Timberwolves seized control early, closing the first quarter on a decisive 14-0 run to turn a 21-21 tie into a 35-23 advantage. Minnesota's defensive intensity set the tone, disrupting Dallas's rhythm and forcing tough shots. The Mavericks' offense completely stalled in the second quarter, managing only nine points on a series of missed jumpers and contested drives. While Minnesota's scoring also cooled, their first-quarter burst provided a cushion they maintained throughout a grinding, low-scoring second period.
Dallas guard Brandon Williams provided nearly a third of his team's offense with 11 first-half points, but veterans Khris Middleton and Klay Thompson were held to a combined 10 points on inefficient shooting. For the Timberwolves, point guard Ayo Dosunmu orchestrated a strong all-around half, leading all players with 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle each added 7 points, with the Wolves' balanced attack proving effective.
The Mavericks face a significant adjustment period before the third quarter, needing to solve Minnesota's defensive puzzles and find easier scoring opportunities to climb back into the game.
