Chelsea have finalized a deal to acquire RC Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco on a six-year contract. The move brings the 21-year-old Argentine back to the Premier League after his previous stint with Brighton & Hove Albion.
Manager Liam Rosenior played a significant role in securing the transfer, having previously worked with Barco during his tenure at Strasbourg. Rosenior had initially approved Barco's signing from Brighton during his time in charge of the French club.
Barco originally joined Strasbourg on a loan arrangement before making the move permanent for £7.87 million last summer. The young midfielder has developed into a key player for the French side this season, contributing 11 goal involvements across 38 appearances in all competitions.
The Argentine international has recently broken into his national team setup, though he has yet to secure a starting position. His creative abilities have drawn comparisons to international teammate Enzo Fernandez, though Barco is noted to lack the same goalscoring prowess.
The transfer comes amid speculation about Enzo Fernandez's future at Chelsea, with the midfielder reportedly open to leaving after hinting at interest in joining Real Madrid. Fernandez is currently serving a two-game suspension for comments that raised doubts about his commitment to the club.
Real Madrid are considering Fernandez as an alternative option if they fail to secure Rodri from Manchester City. Barco's arrival could potentially fill the void should Fernandez depart, with his existing relationship with Rosenior making him a logical signing for Chelsea's midfield plans.
