In a game that served as a final tune-up before the playoffs, the Orlando Magic showcased their offensive firepower, dispatching the Detroit Pistons 123-107 on Monday night at the Kia Center. Led by a dominant performance from All-Star forward Paolo Banchero, the Magic used a decisive third-quarter surge to pull away and secure a victory to close their regular season schedule.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, with both teams trading blows. The Pistons, playing with energy despite their record, kept pace behind the backcourt duo of Daniss Jenkins and Kevin Huerter, who combined for 35 points. Orlando held a narrow two-point lead after a high-scoring first quarter, 30-28, and extended it slightly to a 69-55 advantage by halftime.
The story of the game, however, was written in the third quarter. The Magic came out of the locker room with renewed defensive intensity, stifling the Pistons' attack and turning stops into easy transition opportunities. Orlando’s 39-point second quarter had given them breathing room, but their 29-21 triumph in the third period effectively put the game out of reach. They locked down defensively, shared the ball, and allowed their stars to take over.
Paolo Banchero was the undeniable engine for Orlando, pouring in a game-high 31 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. He was efficient and aggressive, setting the tone for his team. His partner in crime, Desmond Bane, provided crucial secondary scoring with 25 points, ensuring the defense couldn't key solely on Banchero. The Magic’s supporting cast also delivered, with Anthony Black adding 14 points and Tristan da Silva contributing 12.
For the Pistons, the effort was spread across the roster. Jalen Duren was a force inside, just missing a double-double with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Daniss Jenkins matched Duren's scoring output with 18 points of his own and dished out a team-high 7 assists. Javonte Green (17 points) and Kevin Huerter (17 points) provided valuable scoring punches, but it wasn't enough to overcome Orlando’s systemic execution.
The fourth quarter saw the Pistons outscore the Magic 31-25, but the deficit was too large to overcome as both teams emptied their benches for the final minutes. The Magic now look ahead to the postseason, having demonstrated the potent offensive combination that they hope will carry them through a deep playoff run. For the Pistons, the game concludes another season of rebuilding, with flashes of promise from their young core providing optimism for the future.
