NBA general managers and scouts concluded their evaluations of the 2026 men's NCAA Tournament with fresh perspectives on which prospects demonstrated sustainable talent versus fleeting March magic. The tournament's conclusion shifts focus toward the upcoming NBA Draft, scheduled for late June.
Among those who substantially improved their draft positioning was Michigan center Aday Mara, who is now projected as a first-round selection in USA TODAY's mock draft 9.0. The mock draft utilizes ESPN's projected records and incorporates all known trade scenarios involving pick swaps and protections.
Mara is specifically forecast to land with the San Antonio Spurs at pick No. 20 overall. The towering center emerged as one of the most impactful prospects during the postseason run.
"After leading his team to the collegiate national championship game, Michigan center Aday Mara became one of the prospects who helped himself the most during March Madness," wrote analyst Bryan Kalbrosky. "The 7-foot-3 big man, who transferred from UCLA, is a fantastic rim protector."
The defensive metrics substantiate this evaluation. According to CBB Analytics, opponents attempted just 20.9 percent of their field goals at the rim when the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year was on the court, ranking among the lowest rates nationally.
Beyond his defensive presence, Mara possesses underrated offensive skills. "He can also pass well, finding some awesome outlet looks in transition and at the rim," Kalbrosky noted.
This combination of skills creates an intriguing fit with the Spurs' existing roster construction. "Especially in short spurts, Mara would make an excellent backup to Victor Wembanyama," Kalbrosky analyzed, highlighting the potential for San Antonio to develop two uniquely skilled seven-footers.
The Spanish center posted averages of 11.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 67.4% from the field during his collegiate season. His three-point shooting remained a work in progress at 25.0%.
San Antonio enters the draft with multiple selections, including the No. 14 pick (via Atlanta), No. 35 (via Utah), No. 41 (via Portland), and No. 48 (via Miami), providing flexibility to address various roster needs. Mara's projected selection at No. 20 would add significant frontcourt depth alongside their franchise cornerstone.
As draft preparations intensify, Mara's impressive tournament performance has solidified his status as a coveted first-round talent whose defensive prowess and playmaking could provide immediate value to a playoff-caliber organization.
