With the 2025-26 NBA regular season concluding on April 12, the playoff picture is coming into sharp focus as teams jockey for final positioning. The Detroit Pistons have secured the Eastern Conference's top seed despite recent injury concerns surrounding their star player.
"Cade's absence hasn't slowed us down," said Pistons head coach Monty Williams. "This team has built depth throughout the season, and we're peaking at the right time."
The Boston Celtics have locked in the No. 2 spot behind the returning Jayson Tatum, while the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers round out the top four seeds who have clinched direct playoff berths. The most intense competition resides in the Eastern Conference's middle tier, where six teams are separated by just four games.
The Atlanta Hawks currently hold the fifth position at 45-33, followed closely by the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors tied at 43-35. The Charlotte Hornets (43-36), Orlando Magic (42-36), and Miami Heat (41-37) complete the group fighting to avoid the Play-In Tournament, with only two teams securing direct playoff spots.
Out West, the Oklahoma City Thunder have maintained their dominant pace with a league-best 62-16 record, though the San Antonio Spurs remain within striking distance at 59-19. The Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets are tied at 50-28, while the Houston Rockets have clinched a playoff spot at 49-29.
The Minnesota Timberwolves (46-32) currently hold the sixth seed, which would allow them to bypass the play-in round. The Phoenix Suns (43-35) sit in seventh, followed by the Los Angeles Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers tied at 40-38. The Golden State Warriors, despite a sub-.500 record at 36-42, have secured a Play-In Tournament berth.
"Every game matters differently now," said Warriors star Stephen Curry. "We know what we're playing for these final games—it's about building momentum and securing the best possible position."
The Play-In Tournament will take place from April 14-17, featuring the 7th through 10th seeds in each conference. The full NBA playoffs begin on April 18, with the bracket largely set outside of the final play-in outcomes.
Several notable franchises including the Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Brooklyn Nets, and Washington Wizards have been eliminated from Eastern Conference contention. In the West, the Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Pelicans, Utah Jazz, and Sacramento Kings are mathematically eliminated.
